Survival Food: Do You Know the Right Kind to Look For?
Nature provides so many different types of survival food, yet sadly, most average individuals wouldn’t know where to look if they were faced with the very dangerous, and sometimes very real, prospect of having to survive in the wild. Now, mind you that the word ‘wild’ doesn’t necessarily mean being stranded in the middle of a mountain range or in the heart of a tropical island. The ‘wild’ can refer to any situation that is foreign to us.
When it comes to survival food, there are foods that can fill our stomachs, but they won’t offer much nourishment and energy that our body needs. There are also foods that can be harmful, even when they look delicious. Berries are a prime example of this type of food that can cause people to become ill, which could add another element of danger to the entire notion of survival.
Your dietary preferences should be left in the light ages
If you find yourself in a situation of survival and have to rely on your hunting and gathering instincts, then you basically have to put aside your penchant for smoked sausage and gumbo, or even the ‘light’ calorie foods. In survival mode, you need energy, calories, and a host of other important nutrients that are taken for granted in everyday foods.
Below is a list of some of the most ideal foods you can seek out if you’re ever in the situation where survival is completely dependent on yourself, what you eat, and what you do.
Fish
Yes, arguably the best food that we can eat today, in our homes, in the nice comfort of the air conditioner or the heater, is fish. It’s also an ideal source of nutrition in the wild. If you’re lucky enough to be stranded on a tropical island, then there will be an abundance of fish to choose from. If you have a decent size river flowing nearby, you might be able to snag some salmon, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for your heart.
Most ocean fish can be eaten raw, but the same cannot be said for all river fish, sadly. Pollution, sewage, and chemicals that are dumped or seeped into rivers tend to pollute the entire length of the river to some degree. If you gather fish from a river, it’s best to cook it over an open fire to be safe.
Catching fish without a rod and reel takes some patience and practice, but once you have the art form of handling a spear down, you will find it quite rewarding.
Seaweed
That’s right. Seaweed. If you have never tried seaweed, then you’re probably turning your lip up right now at the thought. Seaweed is just about everywhere. In the oceans, in rivers, in lakes, and swamps. Seaweed is loaded with vitamins and minerals. There are many ways to spice it up, of course, and you’ve undoubtedly had seaweed in any number of dishes, even if you didn’t know it, but when you’re trying to survive, you shouldn’t be particular about the raw test. It’s good for you and will help you survive.
Barley and oats
Granted, if you’re lost in the wild, then you may not come across too many barley fields, but oats tend to grow in the wild quite well without any human interaction. Oats and barley have some great nutritional value and can be eaten raw or added to other foods that you collect and cook over an open fire.
If you aren’t fortunate to be stranded in a location that has barley or oats, then try to find some wheat.
Fruits
Important to know, fruits grow in abundance in the wild, but some of them are poisonous. While these harmful fruits and berries won’t kill you, they can make you very sick. It’s best then to stick to the most basic fruits that you are familiar with. Strawberries, for example, and blueberries are commonly found in the wild. So are raspberries.
Wolf berries are also a great source of nutrition. When you come across berries, gather them up and either eat them as you go, or collect them in a pouch. You can make an ideal berry pouch from large leaves that are tied together with the sheathing from vines. Let the air into the pouch so that the fruit doesn’t become rotten too quickly. It’s best when dealing with fruit to pick them as close to when you plan to eat them.
Beans
You might not realize it, but beans grow like crazy in the wild. Most of them are found hidden in bean pods. Learn to locate them and you will have a constant source of protein and energy that will last you for months, if needed.
The right survival food will increase your chances of making it through the tribulations fit and healthy.
